3D printing of research materials

In a recent tweet, Purav Patel asks if there exist applications of 3D printing to replicate materials used in public research.

Does anyone know of any? Would you find such applications potentially useful for your research? I can come up with some weird examples, e.g., replicating the plastic feces used in this study investigating attentional orienting towards stimuli that would alleviate disgust elicited by specific objects
