How can we honor Jon's memory?

Oh good observation. Will tell Tobias who manages this

There is one that he started at https://doi.org/10.14293/S2199-1006.1.SOR-UNCAT.CL49QV3.v1

Hi Rebecca, yep, my intention was to keep it as open as possible, so what this is now is an etherpad that does enable everyone to edit the list, but it also has in-built versioning, so there’s a history of every edit made, so we could also see if names are deleted. Do you think it’d be preferable to have e.g. a Google Forms sign-up mode instead?

Dear all,

thanks to @jcolomb help, the Zoom link for tomorrow’s gathering is available after RSVP at this Meet up page:

See you tomorrow. If you wish, please bring and lit up a candle next to your screen when attending the gathering.

Great, thank you Enrico and Julien. @jcolomb, any way to get English instead of German? I didn’t RSVP now because I wasn’t sure what it said.

I think using this link should work: https://www.meetup.com/Berlin-Open-Science-Meetup/events/270100060/

Hi @Toby! I would personally prefer a form where people also could write maybe their email address to stay updated on the initiative and to increase credibility of each single signature. But the email address shouldn’t be public.

@Toby If you get many signatories, think hundreds or thousands, this will quickly become a bit overwhelming to control.

Hi Rebecca, agreed, you’re right - I’ve now saved the current list of signatories and switched to an actual form to collect future signatures & email addresses  thanks!

Thanks for this petition:

I think this should also be directed towards opencon, especially its code of conduct (coc) committee, given that they remained silent after bullying and harassment could indeed be seen to have taken place, even after jon had reminded them (see below).

In fact, i think the coc committee deserves more ‘blame’ than twitter for offenses mentioned in the petition. Per opencon policy (letter and spirit), the committee should have done more once bullying and harassment were visible on twitter. After all, they believe in the impact of the medium enough to have made the public announcement there.

Also, as some of the harassers and bulliers are still part of the opencon community, the coc should conduct hearings to determine suitable action towards these people.

However, given that the steering committee (sc) of opencon or sparc was informed before the public announcement, i suggest that this matter be taken to the sc first to determine whether the current coc committee members have indeed acted appropriately with regards to the bullying and harassment after the public announcement. Should the finding be in the negative, they should be removed and replaced with others from the community.

The new coc committee then should be the one to conduct hearings against the harassers and bulliers.

Note: Jon’s reminder:

I have also told you directly on a number of occasions that, as a direct consequence of your public statement, several individuals have made defamatory statements about me in public. Because your public statement was so vague, it allowed others to fill in the gaps with their own interpretations, virtually all of which were radically different from the truth. I have also recently become aware that at least one of these individuals has been privately attacking me within the OpenCon community since at least February 2018. Whether or not this is related to the strange timing of your ban and public statement currently remains obscure to me. That same individual continues to make violent defamatory public accusations against me, with the explicit intention to cause me reputational harm, and these are still being shared extensively within the wider community.

These statements included severe accusations of being a sexual predator and rape, which you did not deny or counter any of. Your silence on this matter in public implied that that you validated each one, given the context in which they were made around your statement. Your silence on this matter to me personally when I have discussed them with you in private implies that you believe these accusations, and have already cast your judgement, as demonstrated by your subsequent actions, or lack thereof. I first alerted you to this fact almost 3 months ago now, and that the impact this was having on my physical and mental health was severe and traumatic. To this day, you have ignored this completely.

My points about ‘defamation by innuendo’ were not related to your statement, but the other directly related comments on Twitter (which you did not correct). Here, I am again at a loss, as you have now confirmed that the ban and statement is about one specific, minor, and isolated incident, and yet have allowed these individuals from your community to express stronger and far more severe claims. Your statement, when you shared it on Twitter, facilitated every single one of these accusations, and their associated losses and damages. Hence, libel by innuendo. That is, unless you want to make an explicit statement that OpenCon does not support or endorse those related accusations made by other members of your community.

Open Con Bears indeed an immense responsibility in this case. Their lack of clarity, their apparent absence of internal procedures and their passivity in front of the serious accusations on Twitter makes them responsible for a massive breach of procedure and an evident lack of justice. So do actually all the organizations that followed the move to cancel Jon on the base of this lack of information from Open Con and unverified accusations on social media.

Two opinion pieces to reflect on that :

One reflecting on how the Open Science Community handled Jon’s case :

One reflecting more universally on how Jon’s story is illustrative of an unhealthy and dangerous cancel culture fed by bullying on social media: https://link.medium.com/XE53iZnCU5

Link to the tweet: https://twitter.com/vdeherde82/status/1253210762669154304?s=20

What happened to Jon should never ever happen to anyone again.

Thanks veronique. Read all the links in a single sitting.

I would like to add that while we continue to lack information on jon’s actual case (i doubt opencon coc committee would provide the 3000 plus pages they sent to jon, unredacted, to the open science community), we actually have all the information we need as to who are the bullies and harassers after opencon’s public announcement.

We see with our own eyes that the opencon coc remained silent even when jon implored them to respond to the bullies and harassers.

So these two sets of actors: opencon coc committee members, and the bullies and harassers, could and should be dealt immediately within the opencon community (especially its steering committee as the ‘highest’-ranked decision maker).

Failing that, perhaps the wider open science community should deal with them.

Never forget, and never again.

Hi all,

I am glad to report that the Archive Team has accepted the preservation of Jon’s website. You can check the archival process at http://dashboard.at.ninjawedding.org/3 and input the hash c3ixsosytdcmotd112h06v4n8 to quickly find the entry.

thank you @Orrudamiano.

Dear all, I found this forum while searching for ways to help build a legacy for Jon. I only heard about his death this morning. I did a podcast with him ages ago and (stupidly) never got round to putting it online. He was so warm, charming and fun to work with. I didn’t know him all that well - we only crossed paths through the podcast - but I’m still deeply shocked and affected by his death. He was an extraordinary advocate for open science and I’d love to help out with anything I could do to honour his memory. It’s clear from the tributes that Jon touched so many lives and I would be honoured to contribute to his legacy.

Hi,

I made a post about some of Jon’s time and work in relationship to Berlin and the Leibniz Association Research Alliance Open Science https://genr.eu/wp/in-memory-of-jon-tennant-1988-2020/

At some time I can catalog some of his contributions and efforts for the community in Berlin, Germany.

Thanks
